From 1966 to 1972 he studied oboe and alto saxophone at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague and also composition with Kees van Baaren and electronic music with Dick Raaijmakers.
Since 1972 he teaches electronic music at the Royal Conservatory of Music. As an improvising musician he has participated in various ensembles a.o. Het Nieuwe Leven, the Instant Composers Pool (ICP) (with Willem Breuker), De Volharding and his own ensemble Gilius' Haagsche Hofje.
